Hilde Domin hat viele Länder auf ihrer Flucht bereist. Ihr Rat für Flüchtende, geschrieben 1962 8 Jahre nach ihrer Rückkehr nach Deutschland, lautet so wie ihr Gedicht, denn es reist sich besser „Mit leichtem Gepäck“. Sie besteht darauf das eine „Rose eine Rose“ bleibt, auch wenn ein „Heim kein Heim“ ist. Das Bild der Rose steht dabei für die deutsche Sprache, die ihr im Exil immer Halt gegeben hat (siehe auch ihr Gedichtband „Nur eine Rose als Stütze“ von 1959). Der Hinweis, dass ein Löffel mehr als zwei ist, erinnert an den Löffel der KZ-Häftlinge, die ihn oft an einem Band um den Hals trugen, um ihn nicht zu verlieren. Nach 22 Jahren im Exil ist die Dichterin 1954 nach Deutschland zurückgekehrt.
