imagesHilde Domin, geboren am 27. Juli 1909 in Köln als Hilde Löwenstein und gestorben am 22. Februar 2006 in Heidelberg, war eine Lyrikerin, deren Texte von ihren jahrelangen Erfahrungen im Exil geprägt sind. So hielt sich Hilde Domin für über 20 Jahre in anderen Ländern auf, wie etwa Frankreich, Spanien oder Kanada sowie die Dominikanische Republik, die letzten Endes für den selbstgewählten Nachnamen Domin verantwortlich ist. 1932, ein Jahr vor der Machtergreifung Hitlers, verließ sie Deutschland gemeinsam mit Walter Palm und lebte, studierte und promovierte in Italien. Da sich die italienische Politik ab 1934 auch gegen Juden richtete und zugewanderte Juden keine Möglichkeit mehr hatten, die italienische Staatsbürgerschaft zu erhalten, entschied sich das Paar 1939 aus Italien zu fliehen und emigrierte über England in die Dominikanische Republik. Es folgten zahlreiche Aufenthalte in den USA. Die Schriftstellerin begann bereits im Jahr 1946 mit ersten literarischen Arbeiten. Durch eine zunehmende Entfremdung von ihrem Mann und den Tod ihrer Mutter beeinflusst, schrieb sie in dieser Zeit gegen die Vereinsamung an und gegen aufkommende Depressionen an.32472165n

Hilde Domin kehrte im Jahr 1954 – also nach 22 Jahren Exil – in die Bundesrepublik Deutschland zurück. Endgültig ließ sie sich aber erst 1961 wieder in Deutschland nieder. In den Jahren von 1954 bis 1961 reiste sie oft nach Spanien und verbrachte dort viel Zeit mit dem Studium der spanischen Literatur. Die Schriftstellerin betrachtete sich als spanische Autorin in deutscher Sprache. Sie war beeinflusst vom arabischen Erbe des Spanischen. Bereits ihr erster Gedichtband Nur eine Rose als Stütze (1959) war ein großer Publikumserfolg. Ihm folgten u. a. die Gedichtbände Rückkehr der Schiffe (1962), Hier (1964) und Ich will dich (1970), in denen leidvolle Erfahrungen aus Krieg und Exil verarbeitet werden. Sie war sozial sehr engagiert und gab Lesungen in Gefängnissen, Gotteshäusern und Ausbildungseinrichtungen. Ihr Leben beschrieb sie als »Sprachodyssee«, als Wandern von einer Sprache in die andere. Ihre Muttersprache Deutsch aber blieb durch die Jahre des Exils hindurch ihr unverlierbares Zuhause.
