Am 11. Mai 1901 „im seidigen Grün einer Mainacht“ wurde Rose Ausländer in Czernowitz in der Bukowina geboren. Sie starb am 3. Januar 1988 in Düsseldorf. Fast das ganze 20. Jahrhundert umschließt das Leben der Dichterin; zwei Weltkriege, Flucht und Vertreibung, Schoa und Exil. Sie wurde zur Nomadin, die, nach dem Verlust der Heimat zwischen Europa und Amerika pendelnd, vergeblich versuchte, sich an einem Ort dieser Erde erneut zu verwurzeln.
Einzig die Sprache blieb ihr – „unser verwundetes/geheiltes Deutsch“; sie lebte in ihrem „Mutterland Wort“. Ihr Schreiben ist das Vertrauen in die Assoziationskraft des Wortes, in das Vermögen des Gedichts, Welt auszusprechen und sichtbar zu machen. 1941 besetzten die Nazis die Bukowina und sie lebte bis zur Befreiung 1944 unter ständiger Todesfurcht im Getto der Stadt, später in Kellerverstecken. Dort traf sie Paul Celan, der auf ihre Gedichte aufmerksam wird. 
Nach dem Exil ließ sie sich 1965 endgültig in Düsseldorf nieder. Hier erschien noch im selben Jahr der Band ‚Linder Sommer‘, ihre erste Buchpublikation seit 1939. Beinahe jedes Jahr erschien nun eine Gedichtsammlung. Im Jahre 1977 las die Autorin zum letzten Mal in der Öffentlichkeit anlässlich einer Preisverleihung. Seit 1978 lebte sie ans Bett gefesselt im Nelly-Sachs-Haus in Düsseldorf. Sie schrieb jedoch weiter bis zu ihrem Tode.

„Dreifache Nachteile musste sie überwinden: Sie war eine Frau, eine Jüdin und eine Lyrikerin.
Als Frau gehörte sie zu der zu ihren Lebzeiten noch völlig unterprivilegierten Hälfte der Menschheit, die ihre Bildung, ihre Ausbildung, ihr selbstständiges berufliches Fortkommen, ihr Leben außerhalb der bürgerlichen Normen, ihre Selbstbestimmung ertrotzen und unter großen Opfern ankämpfen musste.
Als Jüdin – nichtreligiös aber sich immer zum Volke der Juden bekennend – war sie der Verfolgung und Vernichtung ihres Volkes ausgesetzt, von ihr erlebt und erlitten. Im Getto von Czernowitz. Sie überlebte, Körper und Seele versehrt und für den Rest ihres Lebens von traumatischen Schäden gezeichnet.
Als Lyrikerin wurde sie Jahrzehnte nicht wahrgenommen. Lyrik hat die leiseste Stimme von allen Künsten, Poesie taugt nicht für lärmendes „Event“.
So bedurfte es schier unerschöpflicher Kreativität und Vitalität um zu schreiben, schreiben, schreiben. … Es ist ihr gelungen, „sich mit wenigen Worten ins Nichts zu schreiben“, es wird sie „ewig aufbewahren“. Wir schulden ihr Dank und Bewunderung für ihr Lebenswerk.
